Taxes can be confusing, but they don’t have to be. Tax Prep for Beginners is a practical workshop designed to help students understand the basics of tax filing, the different types of income they may earn, and key deductions that could save them money. Whether you're earning wages, freelancing, or receiving financial aid, knowing how taxes work can help you file with confidence and avoid surprises.
We are excited to welcome Dr. Alisa Tazhitdinova, Assistant Professor of Economics here at UCSB, an expert in taxation and labor economics, who will break down essential tax concepts and answer your questions. This workshop will cover everything from how the IRS reports different types of student income to tax benefits like the student loan interest deduction and tax-advantaged retirement accounts.
What you'll learn:
- The most common types of student income and how they’re taxed
- What information is reported to the IRS about your earnings
- How student loan interest deductions can lower your taxable income
- An introduction to tax-advantaged retirement accounts and why they matter
